Researcher Scale Changes 2025

The univeristy is introducing new Researcher Scales with effect from 1st January 2025. These scales will replace the existing pay scales with thos elaigned to the IUA scales which are commonly used accross the HE sector.  Rates are correct as at 1st October 2024.

 

Current MTU Scales

  • Research Assistant (€27,817 - €38,546)
  • Researcher (€43,133 - €51,832)
  • Senior Researcher (€49,646 - €61,254)
  • Researcher Fellow (€63,957 - €83,493)
  • Senior Research Fellow (€91,209 - €102,509)
  • There is a casual hourly rate linked ot the first point of the Researcher Scale. (€23.62)

 

New Researcher Scales

  • Research Assistant (€31,962 - €41,943)
  • Post Doctoral Researcher 1 (€44,847 - €51,313)
  • Post Doctoral Researcher 2 (€52,715 - €57,332)
  • Research Fellow (€63,958 - 69,692)
  • Senior Research Fellow (€77,800 - €83,492)
  • Engineer Grade I (€83,272 - €103,925)
  • The casual hourly rate with be linked to the first point of the Post Doc Researcher 1 Scale (€22.74, plus 8% Hol Pay)


New Staff

For staff appointed on or after 1st January 2025, the new scales will apply from appointment

 

Existing Staff

Existing staff will be assimilated onto the new scales, gnerally to the nearest pay scales point not below.  Please note that the pay scale name is or job title is not a factor considered in assimilated staff onto new scales.  In certain instance transitionary arragments will apply - for examaple staff on points 6 - 8 on the Senior Research Scale will remain on those point for their contract duration.   Staff on casual part-time researcher rates will retain the existing rate until their appointment expires, with new staff being appointed to the newer rate.  

 

Pension Arrangements

Currently Research Staff that are not a member of a public service pension scheme, will be elligible to join the new State Auto Enrolement Occupational Pension Scheme, scheduled to commence in September 2025.  We are awaiting further information on this.
